More than 2.8 million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed worldwide each year.

The incidence of non-melanoma skin cancer has been steadily increasing for several decades and is intensified as the population ages. According to the Centers for Disease Control, non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States.

The treatment of neoplasms is usually based on the Mohs surgical technique which involves a series of procedures to excise the lesion along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue. The result is analysed in situ and resection is continued until the cancerous tissue disappears. Although this method is effective and appropriate for many patients, it requires a team of highly skilled surgeons and a laboratory, while its negative impact on skin aesthetics often requires plastic surgery. In addition, surgical treatment is invasive, with risks of scarring and postoperative infections, whereas reimbursement for the procedure has recently been severely limited. Faced with all these aspects related to safety, patient numbers and retention, as well as reimbursement conditions and clinical results it becomes clear that a new, cheaper solution is needed.
